Toughened glass, a type of glass that breaks into small and relatively harmless pieces instead of breaking into large and uneven pieces due to impact, bumping or breaking. Safety glass may be made in two ways. It may be made by laminating two sheets of ordinary glass together, with a thin layer of plastic, or it may be produced by reinforcing the glass sheets with heat treatment.
In 1909, the first successful patent for safety glass was filed by an artist and chemist named Edouard Benedictus in France, who used a sheet of celluloid glued between two pieces of glass. Other plastics were tested, but in 1936 polyvinyl butyral (PVB) had such favorable safety properties that its use became universal. Bulletproof glass is usually made using multiple pieces of glass and plastic.
In the heat treatment method, glass sheets are heated to about 650°C (1200°F) followed by sudden cooling. This method increases the strength of glass sheets almost six times. When such glass is broken, it turns into colorless grains.

Tempered glass (also known as toughened glass) is made by uniformly heating annealed glass. The annealed glass is then rapidly cooled by blowing air evenly over both surfaces simultaneously. This is known as air quenching.
Rapid cooling increases the compressive forces on the surface and the tensile forces inside the glass. Tempered glass can be anywhere from 1/8 inch to 3/4 inch thick. Tempered glass is approximately four times stronger than tempered glass of the same size and thickness. The only characteristic of annealed glass that is affected by heat is its bending or tensile strength. Tempering increases the tensile strength of glass.

Wireglass is made by feeding a welded wire mesh with a special pattern into the molten glass just before it enters the rollers. The wire does not add to the strength of the glass, but if it breaks, it holds the light (a cut piece of glass) in the window sash.
Fiberglass is used in fire-rated windows and doors because it meets most fire codes. For these applications, all wires must be embedded in glass. However, even with fire code compliance, fiberglass is not reinforced glass. In fact, it has only half the strength of annealed glass of the same thickness. In addition, wire glasses cannot be tinted.
